چکیده

Title: SUSTAINABILITY OF COLD-CLIMATE STRAWBERRY PRODUCTION SYSTEMS Matthew Dexter Stevens, Master of Science, 2005 Directed By: Associate Professor, John D. Lea-Cox, Department of Natural Resource Sciences and Landscape Architecture Three cold-climate strawberry (Fragaria xananassa Duch.) production systems, conventional matted row (CMR), advanced matted row (AMR), and coldclimate plasticulture (CCP) were compared for aspects of sustainability including environmental impacts, economic viability and public acceptance over a three year production cycle. As a result of higher total yields, CMR had the highest overall revenue and estimated net profit of any system. The CCP had the lowest observed yield but the largest fruit in year one. Reduced fruit size and yield in the second harvest season indicate the CCP system may not be suitable for perennial production. Both the CCP and AMR production systems were better than CMR in preventing soil, nitrogen and pesticide loss due to rain-induced runoff, and had higher N uptake than CMR. The CCP and AMR systems were preferred over CMR in a pick-your-own consumer preference evaluation. AMR and CCP represent potential sustainable alternatives to the CMR system. Sawdust and Bark-Based Substrates for Soilless Strawberry Production: Irrigation and Electrical Conductivity Management

The objective of this work was to optimize a soilless growing system for producing bare-root strawberry transplants in three organic substrates. Three trials were conducted in the Quebec City area to determine the productivity potential of a peat-sawdust mixture (PS25) and an aged bark (AB) material compared to conventional coconut fiber (CF) substrate. A first experiment was carried out to def...

Sustainability, Sustainable Livelihoods, Climate Risks, Small Scale -Farming

Farmers frequently cope with risks due to the uncertainty of climatic conditions. Population growth, changes in agricultural policies, environmental regulations and the degradation of natural resources such as soil and water also present farmers with numerous challenges. Although farmers have experience in coping with a certain degree of uncertainty, increased climate variability and changes ma...

Data on external walls from a multi-objective simulation for cold climates

Data are related to the multi-objective optimization process applied to the building materials to obtain high energy-efficient precast walls for cold climate. The methodology has been explained on the paper entitled "High performance precast external walls for cold climate by a multi criteria methodology" (Baglivo and Congedo, 2016) [1]. The modeFRONTIER rel.4.3 optimization tool has been used ...
